Urban
Obsessions is a
partnership between three very distinct artists articulating daily
experiences of their surroundings into formal and not so formal
structure by extending moments of visual engagement that reference the
rhythm and flow of urban life.
Mr.
Courtney Cooper is
a member of Visionary and Voices and is known for his obsessive highly
detailed tapestry-like ink drawings. He creates map-like aerial views
of the entire Greater Cincinnati area and its suburbs totally from
memory with uncanny accuracy and humor.
Mr.
Cedric Cox creates
dense, quilt-like abstract drawings and paintings that forces us to
reexamine material culture by deconstructing and reinventing spatial
configurations using elements of popular music genres and iconography.
Mr.
Brian Joiner’s
labor intensive experiments involving polymer resin, paint and mixed
media has lead to visual dialogue that mimics the optical drama and
luminosity of precious gemstones and sky/water effects that are
indicative of jewels in our environment. Mysterious references to night
skies and fireflies, mountains of God and opal seas, cities of angels
and return of kings sets the tone for these precious jewel-like pieces
often referred to as “bling for the walls.”
Through
ongoing creative investigations, all three artists share their vision of
urban life as a celebration in conceptual, formal and visually poetic
terms that actually transcend the now and invite viewers to engage their
own sensibilities of their surroundings.
